I have to be honest with you, there were some fairly daggy Facebook Messenger squeals of delight when Louise and I saw how many of you had joined our linkup last week. This is a project we are very passionate about, building a little community of people who write about wine, and providing some great articles for those who want to know more.
I really struggled to pick just 3 favourites this week. We had posts covering everything from buying wine online, to tasting notes of iconic new releases, to heartwarming stories of family reunions. I really love the breadth that tales about wine can cover.
The first post that really grabbed my attention was Pretty Mayhem’s Mini Guide to Spanish Sherry. I fell in love with Sherry when I did the fortified unit of my WSET diploma, and anything that spreads the word about how delicious and versatile Sherry is, makes me happy. This was also one of our most popular posts from last week.
Talking about popular posts, Please Bring Me My Wine’s article on Dealing with Wine Investors was also one of the most clicked. I think we all like to get some insight into how the other half live – although I could never merely invest in wine. The general consensus from those who commented was that wine exists for enjoyment (I like this crowd).
I loved Wines Actually’s post on Wine Shaming. She raises so many fantastic points about the emotion and connection behind wine. I detest wine shaming, it is rife in hospitality where people who order New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc are often met with derision. My attitude is that, while I love people to try different things, if you love something and you are helping the local wine industry by drinking it, then that can only be a good thing. I would prefer people to be ordering wine over mass-produced beer any day (totally a place for craft beer though).
The Sophisticated Life wrote about a South African Wine tasting she attended. The thing I always remember when thinking about South African wine was when I was doing my WSET Level 3 and we learnt about how poorly vineyard workers used to be treated- they would be given wine as part of their pay in order to create a level of dependency on the job. Fortunately that has changed and with some foreign support and a focus on quality there are some very lovely wines being produced. There is some great info about the wines and the region in Nadine’s post.
Make sure you also check out Louise’s favourites.
If you like to post tasting notes, or any wine-related pictures to social media, you can play along too. Please tag #Winenot and tag us on Twitter (@nicole_rouge and @louiserhodes), Instagram (@nicole_rouge @willungawino) or Facebook (Champagne and Chips, Willunga Wino). We will include our favourite social media post in the weekly roundup as well.
Now it’s your turn, and please spread the word…
