Christmas is over for another year and if you are anything like me you are feeling like you have eaten enough pudding to last a lifetime. I don’t believe in ‘detox’ diets but this time of year I do try to eat a little lighter with more of a focus on vegetables. If you feel the same I have just the place for you- Blue Buddha Cafe.
Blue Buddha is a tiny café with a focus on local and ethically sourced produce. Their location just across the road from the Queen Victoria Markets, ensures a ready supply of fresh veggies. They double as a tiny foodstore where you can stock your pantry with fair trade coffee, chocolate, and a range of teas and superfood ingredients. You can read more about the ethos behind this venture on the fabulous Local Chatter blog.
Meanwhile, I was here for the bacon. Mushroom bacon. If you are vegetarian or don’t eat bacon for religious reasons you need to get your tooshie in here ASAP. This stuff is amazing.
It tastes exactly like perfectly crispy bacon but without the saturated fat. Made from king oyster mushrooms and oven-baked, it is good for you too. Alchemy.
Excuse my iphonography but at this point I was all about munching on the bacon.
My bacon was wrapped in a delicious veggie burger ($12) with a roast beetroot and black bean patty, topped with tangy green mango slaw and a spicy sriracha aoili.
It’s also worth having a bit of a perve at this handsome creature
Iced Blue Buddha Chai ($6.50)- not too sweet with subtle chai spice and just so pretty.
The healthy burger and milkshake alternative 🙂
There is also good coffee, a huge range of teas, some tasty-sounding superfood smoothies and nourishing breakfast options. Just about everything comes with the option of vegan and gluten-free too. You may need to beg them for some bacon on the side though.
